Update Letter

June 6, 2007

To all members of ACSI:

All though I have not provided up an update for a while, there has been activity on both fronts: HB2020 and the local Rail Road Issues.

HB2020 - We had anticipated that this House Bill would have come up for the full house vote this week, but as this is also budget time, it has been placed on the back burner. Nick Simonetta has been bird-dogging this from day one and reports that he is optimistic that it will get through this session, but there are always politics involved, so we should be prepared to provide e-mail and faxed support letters if it looks as if it may get stalled. We will keep you informed and will send out an e-mail to everyone if needed. If it is needed, we will post more information here to make letter writing quick and easy.

We extend thanks to Nick and Mary Ann for there hard work lobbying this bill.

Closer to home: In the coming weeks you will start hearing about the joint effort of the City of Yuma, YMPO and Arizona Common Sense, Inc. to complete a process called the Implication Wheel. This will be a formal facilitated process, intended to bring together all the interested groups within the Greater Yuma Area to map out or chart possible positive and/or negative effects and the value of a new rail line within our area. This is not targeted at the UP, but involves any potential rail proposal; it seems the greater Yuma area is still a prime site and we are still likely to feel the effects of the Punta Colonet project. The goal of this process would be a thought out and defined consensus of project location and value under given sets of circumstances. In short, we want to be proactive instead of reactive.

The second part of this process will look at the effects of the UP's double tracking projects and the effects this has on our area.

We will keep you apprised of progress and planning on this project. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
