Update From Arizona Common Sense Update

Monday, April 28, 2008

As HB 2156 was being considered in the Senate Rules committee, testimony was taken for the first time in three decades! The RRs were there in force, including some folks that they flew in. This was to fight a bill that they agreed to the verbiage on and agreed not to fight. We prevailed on a voice vote, 5-2. This was a difficult and critical hurdle, so this is very good news.

We are now preparing to head for caucus, COW (Committee of the Whole). The danger there is that amendments could be offered, which would necessitate going back to the House, and we do not have the time in this legislature. If no amendments make it on in COW, we will be headed to the governor's desk, assuming success on 3rd read in the Senate.

It is very important to maintain grassroots pressure on the Senate.
  • If you have not yet sent e-mails in to the Senate members, please do and ask that they approve HB 2156 without amendments.
  • If you have already emailed the Senate members, it is not too early to start getting messages in to the governor, that you support HB 2156, soon it is coming to her desk and to please sign it into law, as it is good legislation.
  • We will send the governor a second group of emails when the bill passes the Senate to say please sign the bill now.

The RR folks are now there trying to peel off the possibility of her signature. So we should do what we can to maintain a voice in her ear. We are her consituents.

Below are the contact information for the Senators and Governor Napolitano.
