Common Sense Facts Regarding Proposed
Union Pacific Rail Line
UP's Proposed Route - Safety
As the Punta Colonet port grows to an estimated 6-8 million containers, the result would be almost continuous rail traffic with the probability of in excess of up to 100 multi-car (more than 100 cars) trains a day through Yuma County. |
A rail line through Southern Yuma County would split the county into multiple sections and require many new grade-level railroad crossings, posing significant public safety risks and unacceptable traffic delays. |
Reconfigured traffic patterns would force passenger vehicles, agricultural employees, agricultural equipment and school buses – which currently account for more than 50,000 passenger movements a day – onto county roads. |
A significant increase in diesel exhaust will impact air quality, health, safety of crops and quality of life. |
UP's Proposed Route - Economic Impact
Building new grade-level railroad crossings: Yuma County would be required to pay 95%, Union Pacific only 5% of total cost. |
Dramatic reduction in the already-limited amount of private land for future development. |
Significant delays in delivery schedules because of rerouted traffic, congestion on county roads and at additional grade-level rail crossings. |
Disruption of commerce across the entire Valley. |
Imposing eminent domain on landowners and homeowners along the right of way of UP's proposed route to take control of private property. |
Reduction or elimination of the limited amount of “non-container” rail service that is a vital part of this area's economy. The Greater Yuma area has already lost manufacturing jobs as a direct result of the UP increased traffic. |
ACS is in the process of defining PROPOSED ALTERNATE ROUTES that:
Would run along a section of the county away from heavily populated residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural areas. |
Would not require a significant number of new grade-level railroad crossings. |
Would not pose safety and significant negative financial impacts on the community. |
Would not split the county into multiple sections. |
