An Update From Dave Mansheim

March 13, 2009

Hello to all;

If you have been thinking about us at all, you've probably thought we've closed the shop!!! Well far from it, we are still here and with Nick Simonetta's help, have quietly been keeping an eye on events. Without a doubt, a lot has happened with the elections, economy and other issues in Mexico, over the past 10 months, that has a major influence on the AZ Common Sense's primary issue of the Rail to the Punta Colonet Port project and the UP's double tracking. At the present time it appears that the UP issues and activities are focused on the rail yard project near Tucson at the Picacho Peak area.

Attached are two items; one is an article on Punta Colonet and the other is a legislative report update from Nick Simonetta. Please note that the full bills he outlines can be viewed on-line at http://www.azleg.gov/ and we would encourage you to take a look at any measures that appear at first glance to be items of concern, and let me know. Basically it is your (our members') input that drives the direction of AZ Common Sense.

Here is a short highlight of some items to consider as you look over the Bill Summary as noted by Nick on the 9th of this month;

The fact that the two RR bills involving the Corp Comm have not moved by this time, in a normal year would mean they are likely dead. This is not a normal year, as we have the unprecedented situation that no bills have moved in the Senate. Therefore it is very possible that these, along with hundreds of other Senate bills will move forward in the Senate's delayed process once leadership agrees to move bills. Whether the Senate sticks to its guns in not moving bills before the 2010 budget is finished remains to be seen. Right now, the culmination of the 2010 budget process is nowhere in sight.

Respectfully submitted,
Dave Mansheim

The Current Issue

Issue: Union Pacific Railroad (UP) is proposing to build a rail line from the proposed Mexican deep-water port of Punta Colonet across southern Yuma County to connect with its main east-west Sunset Line.

Response: Arizona Common Sense is not opposed to the rail line, just to the proposed route - or any route - across southwestern Yuma Valley. We have offered to work with Union Pacific to find sensible alternate routes.
